How Important is an Oil Change, Really?

June 8, 2018

One of the easiest ways to keep your car in tip-top shape is regular oil changes. Engines are made up of moving parts that need to be properly lubricated to do their job correctly and without damage to your vehicle.

“Great!” you say, “my car already has oil.”

While it is important you keep an eye on oil levels, it’s also important to change the oil when needed. Over time, that oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dust, dirt and debris from the engine as well as the environment. When that happens, it can’t properly do its job.

Clean oil in your engine also leads to better gas mileage since poor engine lubrication can lead to increased fuel consumption.

It’s recommended you get your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles or every 3 months. Synthetic blends, which the industry is moving to, allow for longer intervals between oil changes. However, you have to remember, road trips and extreme temperatures can affect your mileage and oil use. It’s best to consult your owner’s manual and talk to your service advisor to schedule a routine that works for you and your vehicle.

Keeping a consistent oil change schedule keeps your car running and saves you from spending thousands on repairs. Unfortunately, many of us forget or simply don’t have time to get to the auto shop!
